The Unbearable Smugness of Being…. A CyberTwat | 15/01/2012

On Thursday night I was abused by a CyberNat.  Actually, I’ll call him a Cyber Twat, because he went over and above the usual abusive CyberNat stuff.  Before I continue, let me draw the distinctions.  There are what I call Net Nats – those I’ve met online who are really sound  – we respect the fact that we’ll never agree -but are good to have a chat with anyway (waves at Natalie,  Doug, Exiled Fifer, Andy & Nicola).  Then there’s Cyber Nats, who twist things around and are  mildly nasty.  In another league, there’s Cyber Twats.

Cyber Twats are vile, insulting and anti-democratic.  They won’t allow a dissenting voice.  If you speak up about independence, or have the cheek to question aspects of it then you’re automatically anti-Scottish (even if you’re Scottish) or, memorably, a quisling.  I dared to crack a joke about the name of the new Scottish currency and received abuse from hyper-sensitive gNats.   I was accused of being a Tory – a massive insult when the first song I ever learned was The Red Flag, my great granny was instrumental in the occupation of George Square and my great aunty was pals with james Connolly.  Then, when the numpty worked out that I’m a Weejie, I got anti-Glasgow abuse instead “Central Belt subsidy junkie” were the words used.  Strangely enough, when I challened his views he never replied (I was dying to know if he regarded his fellow SNP supporters from the Central Belt as subsidy junkies, but no reply (shockerooni).   I was also informed that it’s “Aberdeen’s oil” which may come as a bit of a surprise to the Geological Survey…

This kind of abuse used to be rare.  Now, sadly, it’s all too commonplace.  In today’s Scotland you’re not allowed to crack a joke (or the John Knox Wing of the SNP will come after you).  If you come from an Irish background (like Michael Kelly) a Cyber Twat willl tell you to get back to Ireland.  If you dare to question the SNP you’re instantly labelled anti-Scottish (even if you are, in fact, Scottish).  If you doubt me, check out the crap @TomHarrisMP has to put up with.  These people don’t realise that some of the people they abuse and insult (like my friend Mark, who voted SNP in the last election) are completely turned off by their bullying tactics.  As for myself, I’m just sad.  Sad that the Cyber Twats think they can abuse and bully me into their way of thinking.  And sad that a post-independent Scotland will be full of the Though Police. Post-independence, what will happen to us dissenters?

  1. I hope I’ve never done or said anything to put me in Cyber Twat category, but I bilk a bit at you using Tom Harris as an example of a victim. He is pretty good at dishing it out, you know.

    • Hi Richard – no you’re definitely not a cyber twat! I didn’t intend to portray Tom as a victim, but some of the posts he gets are pretty vile.

  2. did you not hear what Kinnock and Serwotka have been saying?

i’m more worried about Labour’s internal & policy problems than the cybernats

because the weaker Labour is in England, the more likely Scotland will become independent.

if the Tories win a majority in the 2015 uk election, then i think Scottish independence will definitely happen within the next 10 years, whatever cybernats do.

    • Some very good points, Neil. I’ll need to have a wee think about that!

  3. What you don’t seem to realise is that Labour is the new tory party.

They will do anything to retain their jobs and final salary pension to the detriment of Scotland.

Scotland is hugely wealthy yet large tracts of the West of Scotland are a mess, at the bottom of a wide range of reported statistics.

The wealth of Scotland was concealed from the people for generations by consecutive London Govts which were stuffed full of so called Scots. It is scandalous that Glasgow and the West have seen no benefit from the oil bonanza..

Scots, who individually benefit from the union whilst their voters continue to have no jobs, no hope and die way before their time.

It is not Aberdeen’s oil, it belongs to the Scottish nation, the only reason the English want to keep us, and the only reason that Osborne is behind the campaign of fear is due to our natural resources.

What a shame that “Scots” such as Harris are complicit in this sham.

The reason is cannot stand Labour, and i have voted for this party in the past, is that they consign their voters to continued poverty through there fear and lies.

The future of Scotland is bright under independence and will give Glasgow and the West a chance, a chance i hope they will take,.

I am sorry if you take things personallly but tough love is what is needed to ensure that “weegies” realise that they are being shafted by labour.

I am the cyber twat that you mention, i apologise for nothing, you may be well meaning, you can still be a socialist, are there any, left in labour? in an independent Scotland.

Most labour types what every “country” in the world to be a “country” apart from the one of their birth.

If you are not for Scotland raising, spending and helping its own people, then in my opinion you are a British Nationalist and deserve most of the abuse you get.

    • Thanks for taking the time to reply, Eric. Your concern for the Central Belt is touching, considering you called as all subsidy junkies the other night. Maybe you can explain why the SNP government – who are in a position to do something about poverty here – have imposed another council tax freeze on Glasgow? And then blackmailed Glasgow into maintaining the freeze by threatening to cut our allocation if Glasgow did raise it? Not very conducive to helping the poor when services have to be decimated.

I don’t take anything personally, either here or on Twitter. I actually laughed at the nonsense you sent me. If you want to live your life being perceived as a bitter, twisted nutjob who is doing his own cause more harm than good, feel free. Maybe if you dropped the ranty, abusive, chip-on-the-shoulder stuff people would take you more seriously. Just a thought.

  4. thanks for the kind words. Im sure that you know about this.

Please god, tell me why folk still vote labour in these areas?.

Here is some public money that could have been put to better use.

  5. Sadly all too true. I’m a genuine ‘don’t know’ when the referendum comes. I posted on a blog which was arguing that a House of Lords debate on the Scotland Bill was contemptuous of Scotland. Frankly, I found the notion ridiculous. The tirade was unbelievable. Still, it inspired me to do a bit of (satirical blogging).
